At HR-Rethought, we believe in putting Others First, and this summer, we had the chance to live out that core value in a big way by partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City (BBBS KC).
It all started when a representative from BBBS KC came to our office to share their mission of building meaningful, one-to-one mentoring relationships between “Bigs” and “Littles” across our community. Their passion for creating positive change lit a fire in our team… and we knew we HAD to jump in!
Step One: Clean Closets, Big Hearts
We kicked things off with a company-wide clothing drive. And when we say we rolled up our sleeves, we mean it literally. Our team dug through closets, storage bins, and mystery boxes in the garage until we couldn’t dig anymore. We brought in bags (and more bags) of clothing to donate, knowing that every item would go toward helping support BBBS KC’s efforts.
Step Two: Fundraising With Heart (and Hustle)
Next, we turned our attention to BBBS KC’s annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event, a fun-filled fundraiser that helps match more Bigs and Littles throughout the city… and did we mention that Humble Hustlers is another one of our core values?
We knew we had to go big. So, we:
- Posted nonstop on social media
- Bugged our friends and families (lovingly, of course)
- Went door to door to local businesses, sharing the mission and asking for their support
We gave it everything we had, and the result was incredible. Together, we didn’t just meet our goal – we surpassed it! Our friends, family, coworkers, and community raised enough to match 70 Bigs and Littles, helping to spark 70 new mentoring relationships that will change lives.
Step Three: Celebrating at Bowl for Kids’ Sake
The big night finally arrived, and our team showed up ready to have some fun. We bowled, we laughed, and yes – we ate our weight in pizza. And while we may not be pro bowlers, BBBS is very forgiving in what they call a “strike,” so let’s just say we bowled more strikes than we could count.
We got to meet other amazing teams, share stories, and cheer each other on. We were honored (and a little surprised!) to find out that we were the third-highest fundraising team of the night! This was a testament to the dedication of our team and everyone who supported us.
More Than a Cause
As an HR-focused company, we know the importance of mentorship, support, and showing up for others. Supporting BBBS KC gave us the perfect opportunity to bring those values outside of our day-to-day work and into our greater community.
We’re incredibly proud of the impact we made and the fun we had doing it. This won’t be our last time partnering with BBBS KC… we’re just getting started!
